City officials in Dana Point remain confident that a week-old landslide along the bluffs of the Dana Point Headlands is not threatening homes above.

The slide happened Feb. 7, following several days of rainfall in the area from a “Pineapple Express” that storm rolled through Southern California.

When the mud, rocks and debris broke loose along the bluffs adjacent to Scenic Drive in Dana Point, the city’s building inspector and the geotechnical engineer checked out the area and surrounding residences and found there was no additional action to take, officials said. Still, they are recommending the homeowner hires their own consultant just to be on the safe side.

“The house is built on caissons anchored to the bedrock,” City Manager Mike Killebrew said on Wednesday, Feb. 14. “Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend the property owner contract for an updated assessment.”

He said the city will remain in contact with the property owner and continue to monitor the site.

The sight of the home on the cliff and the landslide below had many wondering if it was in danger.
