The Shoreline Unified School District and a former superintendent convicted of a sex offense have been sued by the victim’s mother.

Robert Raines was arrested in 2021 on allegations of inappropriate contact with the child of a district employee. The crime allegedly happened in his office.

A jury found Raines guilty in November of a misdemeanor offense of annoying or molesting the child. Raines, 70, of Petaluma was sentenced last month to serve 210 days in the Marin County Jail and to register as a sex offender for at least 10 years. He appealed his conviction and posted bail while the appeal is pending, said his attorney, Charles Dresow.

The lawsuit, which does not name the plaintiff, seeks unspecified damages for alleged negligence in hiring and supervision, sexual assault, battery and other claims. An initial hearing is set for June 20 in Marin County Superior Court.

Raines did not respond to a request for comment, and Adam Jennings, the school district superintendent, declined to comment.
