CARLSBAD, Calif. — Several houses are experiencing sinking backyards after several major rainfalls over the last few years.
The damaged homes on Trieste Drive have sheds falling buckled and twisted, but the hills slowly giving way.
“It can happen quick and fast. You can hear a crack boom, and there it goes,” said Judy Bliss, a resident whose house is not directly involved, but close to the problem area. “It is very, very soft and I say this to him, ‘Look it, we are starting to sink in,’ where that dirt is to our house is so close to the edge. And I’m not an expert, I’m not an engineer but I have common sense, my house is a real concern to me also at this point.”

Several residents are currently in trial over the damages with the City of Carlsbad over who is responsible for covering the millions of dollars to make repairs to the neighborhood. Residents directly involved in lawsuit have declined to speak with us on camera, and several attempts to speak with city officials have gone unanswered. Now, the neighborhood is watching the weather come in and an anxiety is back in the air.
Bliss says she has been in constant communication with the city to let them know what has been happening.
“I have them on speed dial,” Bliss said.
