Three German shepherds in Florida recently took it upon themselves to commandeer a stranger’s car in a bizarre incident that ultimately prompted a police response.
The incident occurred on Kingston Street South in St. Petersburg, Florida.
According to a Facebook post dated February 20 by user Keke Keke, she had left her driver’s side doors open while dropping off her child at daycare. Little did she know, this momentary lapse in vigilance would lead to the three pups unexpectedly entering her vehicle.
In the post, Keke Keke said two of the dogs settled themselves onto the front seats of the vehicle, while a third made itself comfortable on the floor. She was ultimately forced to call the police for help as she realized the dogs were unwilling to vacate the premises.
Expressing her dismay on social media, Keke Keke lamented: “OMG this will forever be my nightmare.”
The St. Petersburg Police Department was subsequently summoned to the scene to intervene. Department spokesperson Ken Knight, in a phone interview with McClatchy News, revealed that the officers found the dogs to be remarkably well-behaved. Employing a combination of patience and strategic coaxing, the officers managed to persuade them to exit the vehicle, albeit with some reluctance on the part of the canines. Two of the dogs got out when officers pulled on their collars, but the third had to be lured out with fish sticks.
Remarkably, this was not the first time these particular German shepherds had embarked on such escapades. A Facebook user commented on the agency’s post about the incident, recalling a similar encounter a couple of years prior when the dogs had taken over their son’s car. Fortunately, in that instance, the dogs were safely returned to their owner after a brief detour.
Following their successful intervention, the St. Petersburg Police Department ensured the welfare of the adventurous canines, providing them with a “lift to Pinellas Animal Urgent Care until the owner was located.”
All three dogs were eventually reunited with their owner, bringing an end to their escapade.
“Some dogs will do anything for a car ride!” the department’s Facebook post concluded.
